Lost son Karadas near return
2006-01-18
Azar Karadas, currently on loan at Portsmouth from Benfica, is close to a move back to Brann.
Karadas, 24, was sold from Brann to rivals Rosenborg in 2002. A controversial move indeed which upset the fans. However all might be forgiven now as the once so popular Karadas is set to return.
Rosenborg paid 625.000 for Karadas, and sold him two seasons later for around three times that to the Portuguese giants.
After Italian Giovanni Trappatoni, who signed Karadas, left Benfica for Stuttgart, Karadas was deemed a surplus at Benfica. He’s currently on loan out the current season at Fratton Park. His primary deal at Benfica expires the summer of 2008.
However Karadas has failed to make an impact at Portsmouth – who already have signed several new players this transfer window. He might again be surplus and available for a move.
So all is in theory set for perhaps the biggest transfer in Norway this year. According to reports from Norwegian TV 2, Karadas has already agreed a long term deal with Brann. All that is left is to sort out the financial and technicalities with Benfica and Portsmouth.
Hanstveit set for Werder trials
2006-01-04
Brann left back Erlend Hanstveit is set for a 12 day stay at German club Werder Bremen for trials.
“Erlend was supposed to have trials with Werder in December, but he was injured. Now we have agreed on this trial as it will give him some good training in this period”, Brann’s director of sports Per-Ove Ludvigsen told Brann’s official website.
Ludvigsen however denies the two clubs having had concrete talks regarding a transfer.
“No, but we’ve given Werder this chance to take a look at Erlend’s qualities. We’ll see what happens. We’ve given Erlend this break because he’s been loyal to us as a player who has stayed with us for a long time now.”
Hanstveit has for almost a decade been one of Norway’s brightest future hopes. At the age of just 24 (turning soon 25) years old, he’s a veteran already at Brann – with 176 first team apperances and 14 goals.
After returning from trials at Bremen, Hanstveit will meet up with the Norwegian national squad for their friendly tour of the USA late January.
Scharner leaves for Wigan
2005-12-22
Brann’s Austrian international Paul Scharner has signed for English Premier League side Wigan Athletic.
Wigan pays Brann £2,5 million (3,7 million) for Scharner’s services. Scharner is eligble for Wigan January 1st 2006.
Scharner becomes with this both Brann’s most lucrative sale and the most expensive Austrian player ever.
Scharner signed for Brann in August 2004 from Salzburg for £420.000 (625.000).
At Brann he enjoyed great success. In 2004 he won the Norwegian FA Cup and got a Bronze in the league.
He was ranked amongst the top players in the Norwegian league as well as being voted Player of the Year by the fans in 2005 – after impressing much as both a central defender and midfielder.
Duo set to sign, one to leave
2005-10-07
The Brann Board of Directors has approved both contracts offered to Scottish midfielder Charlie Miller and defensive rock Ragnvald Soma.
Miller’s contract expires this coming new year, whilst Soma’s expires in one year. Both are key players for Brann and tempting objects for other clubs.
Brann’s director of sports, Per-Ove Ludvigsen, confirmed to local newspaper Bergens Tidende that the signatures are expected to be made to the contracts within this week.
It’s likely to believe that both Miller and Soma will be amongst the top paid players in Norway.
Meanwhile, it’s confirmed from Brann also that Ghana’s U21 captain and winger Michael Helegbe won’t be offered a permanent deal with Brann. He will now return to his native Ghana and FC Liberty Pro’s.
Helegbe has been on loan at Brann since the summer after impressing during trials before the summer.
Brann 2 Viking FK 1
2005-10-03
Brann beat Viking FK 2-1 in monday night’s classic Western Norway derby.
Former Premier League striker Egil Østenstad gave Viking the lead after 28 minutes of play thanks to great work from former Brann, now turned Viking, striker Nkosinathi ”Toni” Nhleko.
Brann were disappointingly weak in the first half whilst Viking dominated the match completely.
But in the second half Brann showed themselves from a different side. Brann equalised through Charlie Miller’s strike from 16 meters in the 65th minute.
Brann’s biggest difficulty this season has been to turn around the result after being under. Not once this season has Brann managed to win after the opposition has taken the lead.
But tonight’s the night we’re gonna make it happen.
In the 84th minute left back and captain Erlend Hanstveit was on target from close range when substitute right winger Martin Knudsen crossed the ball.
One statistic got broken tonight. Another maintained. Brann is yet to lose a monday night fixture at home this season.
Brann is now still number six in the league with three rounds left to play. Brann has 35 points and will fight primarely against Lillestrøm and Viking (both at 37 points) for a top four spot which will qualify for Europe and the Royal League.
